The Periodic Table of Food Initiative (PTFI) approached us to create a series of 5-minute case study documentary videos. PTFI is a global effort that aims to provide data-driven solutions to transform food systems for improved human and planetary health. These videos were to be integrated into Food EDU, an open-access educational platform designed to facilitate the translation and application of cutting-edge research in food, agriculture, nutrition, and health. Our first case study video focuses on Peru, a country known for its incredible agrobiodiversity and rich cultural traditions surrounding food.
The objective was to present the case study from a local perspective, showcasing the connection between traditional foodways, community efforts to improve nutrition, and the scientific work supporting these initiatives. We needed to highlight the importance of preserving indigenous knowledge and food diversity in the context of nutrition security and resilience to climate change. The video had to be culturally sensitive, educational, and engaging for a wide range of learners, including those unfamiliar with the region.
We began by working closely with the in-country project leads and partners in Peru to develop the narrative for the case study. Based on their concept note and through focus group discussions, we crafted a compelling storyline that would resonate with both local audiences and a global educational platform.
Once the narrative was established, we wrote interview questions and generated a detailed storyboard to guide the video production process. Our production team then traveled to Huánuco, Peru, where they spent five days on location capturing the essence of the region’s agrobiodiversity and the intergenerational knowledge of indigenous farmers.
Cultural sensitivity was central to our approach. We worked in close collaboration with local partners and respected the communities we filmed, especially focusing on the indigenous elder and her family who were the heart of the story. We captured their connection to the land, the importance of traditional foods, and the efforts being made to incorporate these foods into local school meal programs. The video also featured insights from a nutritionist and a scientist working with these communities, offering a broader perspective on the links between traditional knowledge, food security, and climate resilience.
The video has been integrated into Food EDU, providing an accessible and powerful educational tool for a global audience. It helps learners understand the importance of safeguarding agrobiodiversity and indigenous knowledge, while also promoting practical applications for food security and sustainability. Through this documentary-style case study, we effectively brought the mission of PTFI to life, showing the real-world impact of their work in communities like Huánuco.
The Periodic Table of Food Initiative is managed by The American Heart Association and the Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT.
