The Challenge

The Periodic Table of Food Initiative (PTFI) approached us to create a series of 5-minute case study documentary videos to be integrated into Food EDU, their open-access educational platform. PTFI is a global effort to provide data-driven solutions to transform food systems for improved human and planetary health.

This case study focused on Ethiopia and explored how scientists, public health leaders, and policymakers are working together to implement a collaborative, systems-based approach to translate research into policies and programs to improve diet quality and promote sustainable food systems. The challenge was to demonstrate how Ethiopia’s Food Based Dietary Guidelines were developed using scientific evidence, and how this process engaged diverse stakeholders across various sectors, including education, health, and industry.

We were tasked with creating a video that would effectively showcase the complexities of policy development, while highlighting how this initiative is advancing both human and planetary health in Ethiopia, and potentially inspiring sustainable food systems transformation across Africa and beyond.

The Solution
Showcasing Ethiopia’s collaborative approach to creating evidence-based dietary guidelines.

We worked closely with PTFI and project leaders in Ethiopia to develop a narrative that would clearly convey the scientific, policy, and collaborative processes involved in creating Ethiopia’s Food Based Dietary Guidelines.

Our team travelled to Addis Ababa, where we filmed interviews and key footage at several important locations, including a local food market, the Ministry of Health, the downtown finance district, and the International Livestock Research Institute.

Interviews with scientists and public health leaders provided a comprehensive view of the challenges and benefits of engaging multiple sectors to develop policies that promote equitable access to healthy diets while supporting environmental sustainability.

Our approach focused on telling the story of how Ethiopia’s guidelines were designed to be actionable, grounded in evidence, and reflective of the country’s unique food system.

The Results
An engaging and informative documentary case study for learners worldwide.
The resulting video provides an in-depth look at Ethiopia’s development of Food Based Dietary Guidelines, showcasing the collaborative efforts of scientists, policymakers, and public health leaders. By focusing on the process of translating research into practical policy, the video offers an inspiring example of how a systems-based approach can address both nutrition security and sustainability.

The case study video has been integrated into Food EDU, making it a valuable educational resource for learners worldwide. This case study is not only relevant for Ethiopia but offers insights that can inspire broader food systems transformation across Africa and globally.

The Periodic Table of Food Initiative is managed by the American Heart Association and the Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT.
