International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD)
Strategy
Training
Like many large institutions, ICIMOD is structured with research activities that operate at multiple, nested levels.
Their communication challenges were threefold: how could they ensure that communication activities at each level were i) being planned strategically; ii) being devised and implemented consistently; and iii) linking to and supporting communication goals and objectives at the other levels.
They reached out to us to help navigate this complexity, provide training for their team on how to develop communication strategies, and create a set of templates and resources they could refer to in the future.
We set about tackling this challenge by first undergoing a discovery phase, speaking with key contacts to understand the nuances of the situation, reading their institutional guiding documents and strategies, and reviewing all existing communication plans.
We then devised a recommended process and framework for communication strategy development and formulated this into a training program tailored to their institutional structure, operational context and team composition.
To compliment the program, we wrote and designed a detailed workbook that summarises the key components of a communication strategy. The workbook is a stand-alone product that can be referred to in the future or used for onboarding new team members.
Next, we created four communication strategy templates – one for each level required – prefilled with examples. These templates ensure consistency of structure and content for future strategies.
A special session on developing linkages across strategies was held, along with strategy building sessions at the institutional level.
