The Challenge

The Periodic Table of Food Initiative (PTFI) approached us to create a series of 5-minute case study documentary videos to be integrated into Food EDU, their open-access educational platform. PTFI is a global effort to provide data-driven solutions to transform food systems for improved human and planetary health.

This case study focused on the 1000 Farms Initiative in rural Montana, in the northwest United States. The initiative demonstrates a collaborative, community-centred approach to generating scientific data that supports the transition towards regenerative agriculture. The goal was to highlight how these efforts are developing an evidence base that connects the health of the soil and ecosystem to the quality and nutritional density of the foods produced.

We were tasked with creating a video that captures this pioneering work, while emphasising the critical importance of valuing and honouring the knowledge and needs of the farmers involved. The challenge was to present this scientific approach in a way that was both educational and engaging for a global audience, while also creating a personal connection to the people leading the work.

The Solution
A narrative capturing the passion and commitment of farmers and scientists in regenerative agriculture.
We worked closely with in-country project leads and partners to develop a narrative that would resonate with key audiences. After discussing the concept and meeting with project contacts, we crafted a storyline that captured the essence of the 1000 Farms Initiative and its regenerative agriculture practices.

Our team developed interview questions and produced a storyboard to ensure a seamless video production process. We then travelled to Montana and spent several days filming interviews and b-roll footage on location.

The video not only focused on the scientific aspects of the work but also brought out the personalities of the farmers and scientists involved. By capturing their passion, dedication, and unique perspectives, the video creates a human connection that elevates the story beyond the data. The farmers’ deep commitment to regenerative agriculture and the scientists’ enthusiasm for bridging local knowledge with research is conveyed through candid interviews and personal storytelling. This approach helped emphasise the personal stakes and emotional drive behind the science.

The Results
Blending science and personal stories to highlight the impact of regenerative agriculture on soil, food and health.
The resulting video showcases the intricate connection between soil health, ecosystem health, and the nutritional quality of the foods produced through regenerative agriculture. It balances the technical aspects of the initiative with a strong human element, allowing viewers to connect with the farmers and scientists on a personal level.

The case study video has been integrated into Food EDU, making it an accessible educational resource for learners worldwide. It offers a unique and energising vision for conducting science that prioritises community collaboration and the long-term health of agricultural systems. Through compelling personal stories and scientific insights, the video highlights the potential for data-driven solutions to benefit both human and environmental health through regenerative farming practices.
